How did you feel? I felt like the kindergartners did a really good job at communicating with us. I also feel like this project is going to be really fun working with them.
Who did you meet?
I met Ian who plays soccer, Andres who plays soccer and Layla. They all seemed to really like what they are working on in class and were very interested in what we were doing as well.
What did you observe about how they responded to your project? I think they were pretty interested in our projects. Andres and Layla asked a lot of questions and Ian was really good at keeping the conversation going.
What did you observe about how they interacted with your project?
None of them really touched it, but it definitely caught their attention and seemed like it was something they were looking forward to doing.
Were there certain things you noticed that they, in general found more or less interesting ?
To me they seemed more interested in playing with the gears then they did watching how it worked. Which was pretty cool, cause I think they learn more that way.
Long Now Reflection:
2014 Exhibition reflection
Last night was my first exhibition as a student at High Tech High. Coming from a public school this event was astonishingly different for me. I got to socialize with all different kinds of people during this project. I didn't realize how hard it would be for me to work in partners to create something that matters. I am a really stubborn person and like doing things my own way, but this project has shown me how every person has their own unique way of looking at things and if you can put you minds together you can create something bigger and possibly even better then the work one person can do alone. I learned that sometimes you are going to have partnerships that might not work out, but everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses and you have to learn to overcome obstacles alone.
Being at high tech high is such an amazing gift for me. The projects they do at this school teach us so much more than physics or humanities, but thinks we can take with us throughout our lives. I am learning to work well with others and to manage my time wisely. That grades aren't always the only thing that matter, but as long as you have a firm grip on what is being taught you will do well.
I strongly believe that what has made this year different for me is the passion my teachers have when they teach my class. I know that my teachers truly care about my education. When I come to school every day I know that I will leave knowing a little bit more than I did when I got here. A phrase that is used many times throughout our day at high tech high is “deeper learning” and too me this not only means understanding what we are taught better, but truly caring about what you our learning. These projects have taught me time management, social skills, hard work, dedication, and how to truly love learning.
Long now reflection What you did and what the group did: My group was the railing group. We all decided we wanted the railing to be metal with wood on top. After we came up with the idea we built a model.
Why you or the group did what you did. What things did you consider?
My group did this, because we knew that the railing would have to be stable. We also new that it had to be strong enough so if kids decided to climb on it, it would not break nor would they get hurt. Finally we considered the fact that we needed something to catch peoples attention so we added the wood on top so we could put information about the project.
What do you think about the work that has been done? What do you think about the process as a whole? What could you have done better?
I really liked our idea and I think it can be very appealing to the eye, but also serves a point. I think we could have made it a little more creative, but I like our outcome so far.
What are the next steps in your process? What needs to be attempted next?
Our next step is to make a more accurate model and start thinking about cost as well as space.
