Overview
For this project my peers and I were given a country in EU and had to research their involvement in refugees. After weeks of researching and becoming familiar with our countries we had to debate at SDSU what our country believed was the best way to improve immigration problems. We did this project to have a better grasp on this certain economical problem and realize how it involves each and every one of us. Most Useful Link: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34131911 This link was extremely useful when I was doing my research. It showed me where the most refugee were coming from, where they were going, and which countries were taking them, as well as their living circumstances. This article helped me better understand where my country (Hungary) was in the overall issue. Once I was able to learn about Hungary's position I was able to find ways to defend it. This article taught me that Hungary was the most affected country by the refugees, because it is used for a transition route meaning that refugees go through Hungary on their way to other places mainly Germany, but seeing that the economy of Hungary is already in poverty it was hurting its economy even more so. Improvement of quality My first draft of the debate was very scattered and not labeled. My first statement did not give my overall position of my country. The opening statement is supposed to very powerful to capture the attention of the audience. I think that Bradon really helped me be able to start my debate strong, because he went through and critiqued my opening statement. He helped me pick words that were stronger, and statements that really helped set the tone. Reflection: I think that overall the most useful skill I learned for this project was organization and lay out. At first when I did research I would put everything in a Doc, without really sorting it or labeling anything. Half way through the project I realized that I was waisting time researching things that I already had, I just didn't remember were I put them. Towards the end of the project my aunt who debated throughout high school and college helped me organize everything. This was really helpful, because I didn't have to spend extra time after researching or looking for facts that I already had. I also believe that my responsibility grew, because if at times I chose to socialize instead of work I knew that I would have to do more work at home so I could be prepared for the debate. I am really proud of myself for winning the Gravel and becoming the top debater. I tried really hard to not only know about my country, but others as well and I think my collaboration skills benefitted from this. I was able to talk to all kinds of people to come to an overall solution that I spent a lot of time thinking about. Future: If I were to do this project again I think I would practice my speech more. Looking at the video I can see that I relied on my notes a lot. Usually I do this because I am nervous, but I think if I practiced more I would have been more confident in what I was saying and overall it would make my speech better as well as more engaging.
