Overview - During this project we worked with groups to create debates discussing athletic issues. We learned about different philosophies as issues that are debated upon. For my particular issue Annika, Natalie I debated on whether or not athletes are overpaid and work hard enough for their amount of income.
Growth: During this debate we had many different drafts and lots of people gave us good feedback, but I think the best feedback we received was to research both sides of the debate. At first this was extremely irritating for me, because I felt like it was asking me to do unnecessary work, but in the end it worked out a lot better, because researching the opposing side gave me insight and great counter arguments to undermine the other side. This ended up being an advantage and I learned a great strategy to better my debating skills. The more you know on the overall topic the more prepared you will be.
Reflection: This project was very difficult for me due to the lack of interest, but I discovered that you could look at it from more then one angle it became more interesting. I may not be as interested in sports as some of my peers, but I am interested in debating. Once I saw it more as something to be accomplished and less as a endless job I was able to push through. It was also challenging to work well with people. This was our second project that we did for my sophomore year and half way through organizing our debate we were forced to change sides. Even though this was very irritating at the time looking back I think I got more out of it, because I had a better understanding on the whole issue and not just one side. It also taught me how to work harder and to overcome barriers.
